Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a method of assessment (leading to the award of credit) that considers whether learners can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through knowledge, understanding or skills they already possess and so not need to develop through a course of learning.
The student can produce evidence that already meets the requirements of all or part of the qualification that they are working towards. They may bring evidence of their prior learning or achievement from (1) a full or part-time job or (2) from other courses they have done or (3) from voluntary or unpaid work. The evidence student provides must match the requirements (learning outcomes and associated criteria) of the qualification they wish to gain. Evidence of learning must be valid and reliable.
